Short Story Submissions

Fenechty Publishing Anthology of Short Stories Autumn 2021

Short Story Submissions are now required for our quarterly Anthology of Short Stories. Stories can be any length between 500 and 5000 words, and in any genre.

This is a brilliant marketing opportunity for new or published authors.

We will publish each edition of the Anthology as a free ebook available via our own website, and from Smashwords, Apple books, Barns & Noble, Kobo, Odilo and Scribd.

We will also publish a paperback edition of the Anthology on Amazon, with all profits being donated to the Water Aid Charity.

We will also include a biography and link** to your own website or social media pages, together with information about other books you have had published.

There is no deadline. Stories submitted too late for one edition will be considered for the following edition.

** We cannot link to publishing sites. For example, we cannot expect Apple Books to distribute a book with links to Amazon, and vice verse. We can only link to a social media site, or your own website if you have one.

Full Terms and Conditions

You must be the author and sole copyright holder of any work you submit.

You give us the right to publish your submitted material in the anthology if we select it.

You can submit a previously published story as long as you are the author and are still the sole copyright holder, and as long as it was previously published at least two years ago.

YOU keep all other rights to the material we publish, including the right to publish elsewhere.

You shall indemnify Fenechty Publishing against all losses, claims, damages, costs and expenses incurred by Fenechty Publishing (including legal expenses) arising from the submission of a story where you are not the sole copyright holder.

Submissions should be in MS Word format (.doc or .docx).

File name of submission should be in the format of STORY NAME and AUTHOR NAME and without spaces (e.g. TheDaVinciCode-DanBrown.docx )

Submissions should be between 500 and 5,000 words but should not include any images within the text.

Submitted stories must be in English and please check your story for spelling and typing errors before submission.

The story should begin with the name of your story and your author name.

Please don’t leave two spaces after a full stop. That’s not been necessary since the demise of typewriters. If you do add two spaces, we have to remove all the surplus ones.

Please don’t use the tab at the start of paragraphs. Tabs are not required in the publishing process, and we have to remove them all if you have added them.

You can also submit a separate Word document if you have had any books published. This should clearly state your author name at the top and describe any books you have had published (no images). You can also include details of your website or social media pages, but we cannot include links to author pages if they are on a publishing site. That is because we are publishing the anthology with various publishers including Smashwords, Amazon, Apple, etc. We cannot expect those publishers to distribute the anthology if it contains links to a different publisher.

We require no payment of any kind, and we intend publishing anthologies every quarter in eBook and paperback format.

FENECHTY PUBLISHING

It is our intention to publish a quarterly anthology containing short stories in as many genres as have suitable materials submitted provided sufficient submissions are received.

We intend publishing anthologies in eBook format (EPUB and MOB), both via our own website and on Smashwords, Apple books, Barns & Noble, Kobo, Odilo and Scribd.

We also intend publishing anthologies in paperback format on Amazon* and will pay all profits to the Water Aid Charity. We will provide full details at the bottom of the Water Aid Charity page, including the number of paperbacks sold, the royalties received, and the dates we paid those royalties to Water Aid. (*Paperback may not be available in India, and some other countries, because printing facilities are only available on the following Amazon websites: Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.es, Amazon.it, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.ca, Amazon.au)

We will make the eBook version of the anthology free in order to encourage the widest possible readership and the widest potential marketing opportunity for authors.

We will make no profit from the paperback version and will pay all profits to Water Aid.

We will not charge any fee for publishing any short story submissions we select for publication in an anthology, but we will not pay you either. We will make no profit from your work.

Authors should see the publication as a marketing opportunity, not a financial opportunity. Your name will become better known, you will help a worldwide charity, and you can mention the fact we have published your story in future correspondence with publishers.

We reserve the right to edit your submission for length, structure and typographic errors.

We will not change the title of your story in the body of the anthology, but if the title is too long we may need to reduce its length on the contents page to conserve formatting.

We reserve the right to not publish any short story submissions sent to us.

Terms last updated : 27 Sept 2021 – formatting advice about sentence endings and paragraph beginnings added. Only one space needed between sentences, and tabs not needed at start of paragraph.

I understand that the stories are published every quarter. But can writers submit their contributions at any point of the year?
Is there any criteria other than the word length that writers must absolutely meet?

Authors can submit their short stories at any time.

Stories submitted too late for one edition will automatically be considered for the summer edition.

There is no theme, and all genres are acceptable. The only real criteria is that they have a beginning, middle, and end, and must be well written. By ‘well written’ we don’t mean you must be the world’s greatest writer, but it must be readable without major grammatical errors. We may correct minor errors. We may even ignore some errors, but we haven’t time between editions to completely rewrite someone’s submission.

We all like different types of stories, so whether or not we like a particular story is not relevant. For example, I like fantasy but dislike romances. Jilly likes mysteries but dislikes fantasy. Our readers will like and dislike different genres too. The question we ask ourselves, is not whether we like it, but whether some readers of the anthology will like it.

“The question we ask ourselves, is not whether we like it, but whether some readers of the anthology will like it.” Bravo! Sometimes editors SAY they want eclecticism, but don’t really mean it.

Minimal conditions for submission! Great! I hope the only criterion of “If we select it” is not too harsh. So that the new writers looking for marketing their creations are not disheartened.

Vifajay. If you check previous editions you will see a wide variety of stories and genre’s. As long as the story is the right size, well written, and suitable for a general audience, it will usually be accepted. One of the main reasons for rejection is the tendancy for some writers to submit stories that preach to the reader. If someone has a political, moral, or religious point to make those points are best made in a non-fiction publication rather than a fictional publication of short stories.

To enlarge on the above reply already given to Vifajay.
We have submissions, and readers, from around the world, so we have to be careful we don’t offend people from other countries or other cultures. To give you some examples, we won’t publish a story from an atheist or agnostic which is critical of Christianity or Islam, and we won’t publish a story from a Christian or Islamist which is critical of atheism or agnosticism. We have a wide worldwide readership so will not publish anything any of them would find offensive. Good stories are timeless and should be enjoyable across cultures, religions, countries, and differing political and intellectual beliefs.
To answer your question directly. Context and content will be viewed on a case by case basis. Jilly has been excellent in filtering out the worst offenders, and our aim is to provide stories suitable for the widest possible readership.
